Winter Forecast: Best and Worst States for Skiing and Snowboarding in 2024-2025

As skiers and snowboarders, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and her winter storms to determine when and where we can enjoy our favorite winter activities. We could travel to the states with the biggest ski resorts and the steepest slopes in the country, but if there's no snowfall, we may as well be in Kansas.

What's the the 2024-2025 winter forecast for our next ski and snowboard season? And which states are predicted to receive the most snow? We turned to the reliable Old Farmer's Almanac to get our questions answered. The first edition of the Old Farmers Almanac was published in 1792 and the iconic publication's self-proclaimed 80% accuracy rate is solid by our standard.

Overall, this winter season is predicted to be a "calmer, gentler" winter according to Carol Connare, Editor-in-Chief of the Old Farmer's Almanac. She also described the season as an "uneventful winter" compared to recent years.

While a mild winter forecast may be welcome news to the majority of Americans who prefer a light dusting of snow and just enough to make a snowman on the front lawn, skiers and snowboarders are praying for predictions of big storms and snowfall. But this approaching winter season's forecast isn't that.

To make sure you aren't missing out on the snowfall predictions for this upcoming season, we took the results of the Old Farmer's Almanac winter season forecast and ranked the best and worst states for skiing and snowboarding. We saved the state with the best forecast for last! Which do you think it is?

Make sure your ski passes and winter travel plans align with the states forecasted to get the most snow this winter.

Worst: Vermont

Sorry Killington skiers and snowboarders, but the winter weather forecast isn't looking great for snowfall in the state of Vermont. The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a mild and dry winter for Vermont and the rest of the northeastern part of the country.

Skiers and snowboarders in Vermont may need to travel out of state to get their fix this winter season.

Best: Colorado

Thankfully the winter forecast for Colorado is looking promising! The Old Farmer's Almanac is showing mild and snowy conditions across the majority of the state. Skiers and snowboarders in Colorado can anticipate big snow storms in early November, mid-to-late January and late February, and that snow should hold!

Eastern Colorado is forecasted to be one of the coldest regions of the country for this winter season and could receive above-average snowfall. Overall, Colorado looks like one of the best states to ski and snowboard next season.

Worst: California

Unfortunately for lovers of Mammoth Mountain and the resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe, the state of California is not forecasted to have an epic winter this upcoming season. The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting mild and wet conditions across the state, and lots of rain!

Ski resorts in Southern California aren't predicted to get a lot of snow either. Ovearll, this 2024-2025 winter, Californians aren't expected to experience another crazy winter of record-breaking snowfall and may need to travel out of state for good conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

Best: Wyoming

We're listing Wyoming as one of the 'best' states for skiing and snowboarding this winter, but the weather patterns aren't looking perfect for Jackson Hole. While the Rocky Mountains are predicted to get snowfall, the majority of the snow forecast runs from the middle of Wyoming down to the southern corner.

Beaver Creek Ski Resort may see solid snowfall; otherwise, skiers may want to head to the smaller mountains of Hogadon Basin or Snowy Range to shred the pow.

Worst: Oregon

Unfortunately for skiers and snowboarders in Oregon, the winter weather forecast isn't looking ideal for the 2024-2025 season. The entire state of Oregon is shown as 'mild' and 'dry' in the Old Farmer's Almanac forecast.

Skiers and snowboarders who typically visit Mt. Hood and Mt Bachelor may consider traveling north to the Seattle area to ski Crystal Mountain. Oregonians may not know what to do with themselves this winter without heavy rain or snow!

Best: Montana

While the entire state of Montana is predicted to have a mild winter, there are also regions that are expected to get snowfall. The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting snowfall for the middle of Montana that we hope finds its way to the western region of the state where the majority of ski resorts are.

Montana skiers and snowboarders may need to do some snow dances to redirect the storms, otherwise Bridger Bowl and Red Lodge may be the resorts with the most snowfall. We're not ruling out snow for Big Sky, though!

Worst: New York

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac forecast, New York will have a mild and dry winter season. It's not looking like much of any precipitation is expected in the northeast, leaving skiers and snowboarders in New York high and dry.

This winter season will be a good time for New Yorkers to book an out-of-state ski trip to get their turns in.

Best: Washington

We see a pocket of hope in the state of Washington for solid snowfall during the 2024-2025 winter season. The Old Farmer's Almanac forecast is showing the western half of Washington to be cold and snowy. This makes locals of Mt. Baker, Crystal Mountain, and Stevens Pass very happy.

We hope that Washington is ready to share their runs with out-of-state visitors, as they may see Oregonians making the trip north to find snow on the slopes.

Worst: Idaho

Idaho isn't looking very lucky for snowfall in the upcoming winter season. Statewide, the Old Farmer's Almanac is forecasting mild and dry conditions for Idaho. Skiers and snowboarders who usually visit Silver Mountain, Tamarack and Pomerelle may want to set aside some cash to take a ski trip out of state.

With neighboring states like Utah, Montana, and Wyoming receiving snow, hopefully Wyoming residents won't have to travel far to find the stoke they're looking for. Don't count on Idaho having an epic winter for the 2024-2025 season.

Best: Utah

Utah is expected to experience a mild, snowy winter across the entire state. Seeing 'mild' conditions in the forecast means that it won't be horribly cold, but will stay cold enough to bring snow when the storms roll through Utah.

Utah is showing the most snow forecasted of any state with ski resorts. Booking a skiing trip to Park City, Snowbird, Brighton Resort or other Utah ski resorts may be your best bet for shredding powder in the 2024-2025 winter season. University of Utah college students should be stoked!
